Five London squares you should corner

By

You are headed to London for a bit of a holiday, taking a break from the routine, and ready to relax. It’s a perfect time to visit, because the weather may still be fair, perfectly gorgeous on many days, while the crowds have decidedly dwindled. You’ve got a few favorite stops you want to make, but also wish to try out a few new locales. Here’s our tip: Be Square!

London possesses a collection of squares like no other city in the world each with its own personality. You’ve been through Trafalgar, and other famous squares, but many of the lesser known are certainly worth a look.

Eaton Square boasts lovely gardens which hold their color well into autumn. The residences surrounding it are, or have been, home to many rich and famous Brits. St. Peter’s Church at the east end features classical architecture, and is also the home of the Eaton Square classical concert series, which would provide a lovely way to spend an evening.

Clapton Square looks much the same as it did when Dickens ventured there in the mid 19th century. Vast renovation has seen to that. It is a delightful place to walk on a fine day, or better yet, under an umbrella in the mist of a rainy evening. Just keep an eye out for the Artful Dodger lurking a few paces behind!

Russell Square is a spacious garden square in Camden. Pack a blanket and a batch of books, and spend a leisurely afternoon catching up on your reading. If you bring the kids, let them splash in the fountain. Pursue it all in unhurried fashion by booking accommodations at one of the comfortable and affordable London hotels in the vicinity.

Speaking of books, visit Maggs Brothers Antiquarian Booksellers, occupying the most famous haunted house in all of London, on Berkley Square in the West End. Just be sure to get out before the shop closes for the night! Call it a day at one of the hotels in London featuring fantastic rates and cozy rooms for off-season visitors.

Parliament Square may draw those interested in politics, or who have something to protest! But be forewarned, even Parliament can do little about the weather! Sculpture fans will appreciate the statutes of some of the greats, like Churchill, Disraeli, and Lincoln. The square is near affordable hotels in London, and also gives access to Gothic Westminster Abbey. If rain sets in you may want to tour one of the most historic churches in Christendom. Some London hotels offer discounted tickets to tours in combination packages. Go online to see what deals are currently being offered. Make a list and circle the squares you want to see!
